Understanding your skin

Just as the eyes are the window to your soul, so as the skin is the mirror of our health and well being. Take care of the skin in the best possible way; it is the biggest organ of the body. The skin shields our body from external environment. The skin also produces certain secretions that kill bacteria .The pigment melanin provides a chemical pigment defense against ultraviolet light that can damage skin cells. Skin plays an important role in vitamin D synthesis.

Both inner and outer environments influence the way our skin reacts to increasing age, achieve healing, and maintains its appearance. Our skin is made up of three layers. Skin consists of a thin outer layer called epidermis, a thicker middle layer called dermis and the inner layer called hypodermis. The building blocks of outer layer of the skin are called Keratinocytes. Melanocytes are the colour producing cells (Melanin).

Hormonal changes, medical conditions, genetic predisposition of skin type etc. are the major internal factors that influence the well being of the skin.

Lifestyle, weather changes, prolonged sun exposure, poor environment, pollution and skin care routine are the external factors that contribute to what takes place on and in your skin.
